The Acura EL was a compact sedan produced by the Japanese automaker Acura from 1997 to 2005. It was sold exclusively in Canada, and was essentially a rebadged Honda Civic with some cosmetic and performance upgrades.
The Acura EL was introduced as a replacement for the Acura Integra sedan, which had been discontinued in Canada after the 1996 model year. The EL was positioned as an entry-level luxury car, offering a higher level of refinement and features than the Civic on which it was based.
Initially, the EL was offered with a 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine producing 127 horsepower. In 2001, the engine was upgraded to a 1.7-liter four-cylinder unit with VTEC (Variable Valve Timing and Lift Electronic Control) technology, which increased output to 127-127 horsepower, depending on the transmission. The EL was available with either a 5-speed manual or 4-speed automatic transmission.
Standard features on the Acura EL included power windows and door locks, air conditioning, a 6-speaker AM/FM/CD stereo system, and an anti-theft system. Higher-end models offered leather upholstery, a power sunroof, heated front seats, and other luxury features.
In 2004, the Acura EL was discontinued and replaced by the Acura CSX, which was based on the seventh-generation Honda Civic. While the EL was only sold in Canada, the CSX was also sold in other markets, including the United States.
Today, the Acura EL is considered a rare and collectible car, especially in its Type-S trim level, which offered sport-tuned suspension, upgraded brakes, and other performance enhancements.
